Equilibrium ion distribution in the presence of clearing electrodes and its influence on electron dynamics

Here we compute the ion distribution produced by an electron beam when ion-clearing electrodes are installed. This ion density is established as an equilibrium between gas ionization and ion clearing. The transverse ion distributions are shown to strongly peak in the beam's center, producing very nonlinear forces on the electron beam. We will analyze perturbations to the beam properties by these nonlinear fields. To obtain reasonable simulation speeds, we develop fast algorithms that take advantage of adiabatic invariants and scaling properties of Maxwell's equations and the Lorentz force. Our results are very relevant for high current Energy Recovery Linacs, where ions are produced relatively quickly, and where clearing gaps in the electron beam cannot easily be used for ion elimination. The examples in this paper therefore use parameters of the Cornell Energy Recovery Linac project. For simplicity we only consider the case of a circular electron beam of changing diameter. However, we parameterize this model to approximate non-round beams well. We find suitable places for clearing electrodes and compute the equilibrium ion density and its effect on electron-emittance growth and halo development. We find that it is not sufficient to place clearing electrodes only at the minimum of the electron beam potential where ions are accumulated

Spin precession mapping at ferromagnetic resonance via nuclear resonant scattering

We probe the spin dynamics in a thin magnetic film at ferromagnetic resonance by nuclear resonant scattering of synchrotron radiation at the 14.4 keV resonance of $^{57}$Fe. The precession of the magnetization leads to an apparent reduction of the magnetic hyperfine field acting at the $^{57}$Fe nuclei. The spin dynamics is described in a stochastic relaxation model adapted to the ferromagnetic resonance theory by Smit and Beljers to model the decay of the excited nuclear state. From the fits of the measured data the shape of the precession cone of the spins is determined. Our results open a new perspective to determine magnetization dynamics in layered structures with very high depth resolution by employing ultrathin isotopic probe layers

Nuclear resonant surface diffraction

Nuclear resonant x-ray diffraction in grazing incidence geometry is used to determine the lateral magnetic configuration in a one-dimensional lattice of ferromagnetic nanostripes. During magnetic reversal, strong nuclear superstructure diffraction peaks appear in addition to the electronic ones due to an antiferromagnetic order in the nanostripe lattice. We show that the analysis of the angular distribution of the resonantly diffracted x-rays together with the time-dependence of the coherently diffracted nuclear signal reveals surface spin structures with very high sensitivity. This novel scattering technique provides a unique access to laterally correlated spin configurations in magnetically ordered nanostructures and, in perspective, also to their dynamics

Les pratiques du quotidien transfrontalières

Cette contribution a pour objet les pratiques du quotidien transfrontalières qu'exercent les habitants de Sarre, de Lorraine, du Luxembourg, de Rhénanie-Palatinat et de Wallonie. La réflexion sur la possibilité de déterminer la Grande Région SaarLorLux comme réalité de vie quotidienne transfrontalière à l'aide des réalisations transfrontalières de pratiques quotidiennes, sera notre fil conducteur. Cela signifie que l'organisation spatiale de pratiques du quotidien qu'il s'agira de reconstruire dans ce qui suit et les flux migratoires en résultant entre les régions reflètent les réalités de vie quotidienne transfrontalières au sein de la Grande Région SaarLorLux. Dans ce but les pratiques transfrontalières exercées le plus fréquemment dans l'espace étudié sont considérées, notamment d'activités telles que faire les courses pour assurer les besoins quotidiens, faire du shopping lié aux loisirs, se détendre dans la nature/faire du tourisme, fréquenter des manifestations culturelles et rendre visite à des amis et à des membres de la famille. La collecte des résultats issus de trois analyses empiriques qui étudient les questions de culture au quotidien des habitants de la Grande Région SaarLorLux dans une approche transfrontalière permettra de réaliser le programme esquissé. Ces analyses extrairont des résultats partiels qui seront mis en relation entre eux et avec des chiffres clés socioéconomiques pour mettre en évidence l'organisation spatiale, les motifs et autres facteurs contextuels de pratiques du quotidien transfrontalières dans la Grande Région SaarLorLux. Il s'agit donc d'un vaste bilan de résultats d'analyses récentes qui donnent un aperçu sur l'existence et la constitution de réalités de vie quotidienne transfrontalières dans la Grande Région SaarLorLux

Familiar strangers. Representations and status of cross-border workers in Luxembourg

Grenzgänger sind in Luxemburg zu einer unverzichtbaren Arbeitskraftressource geworden. Im Alltagsdiskurs werden sie oft unter verschiedenen Vorzeichen thematisiert, woraus sich bestimmte Repräsentationen hinsichtlich der Grenzgänger ableiten lassen. In diesem Beitrag werden auf Grundlage empirischer Ergebnisse solche Diskurspraktiken der Luxemburger Wohnbevölkerung im Hinblick auf Grenzgänger herausgearbeitet. Hieran anknüpfend sowie aufbauend auf der Heuristik Vertrauter (+/-) / Fremder wird der den Grenzgängern zugeschriebene Status bestimmt. Deutlich wird dabei, dass innerhalb der Luxemburger Gesellschaft ambivalente Repräsentationen des Grenzgängerwesens vorherrschen, die auf Alteritätsverhältnisse und Identitätskonstruktionen unter spätmodernen Bedingungen verweisen.Cross-border commuters have become an indispensible resource in Luxembourg. In everyday discourses they are discussed under different prefixes, which indicate that there are certain representations with regard to cross-border workers. Based on empirical research, this paper addresses the various underlying discourse practices of Luxembourgish residents. The ascription of status to cross-border workers is analysed using a familiar (+/-) / stranger heuristic. It has become evident that within the Luxembourgish society there are ambivalent representations of cross-border commuters that point at circumstances of alterity and the construction of identity under late modern conditions

Beyond the bordering perspective: Rezente Entwicklungen in den Border Studies

Die Border Studies sind ein aufstrebendes Arbeitsfeld und erfassen zunehmend mehr Disziplinen. Dabei hat sich eine Untersuchungsperspektive durchgesetzt, die sich an den Akten der Hervorbringung von Grenzen und Grenzräumen orientiert und als practice shift bezeichnet werden kann. Sie ist allerdings in die Kritik geraten und erfährt in jüngster Zeit eine dynamische Weiterentwicklung. Sie gründet auf dem Anliegen border(ing) practices weitgreifender zu erfassen und ihrer Vielschichtigkeit gerecht zu werden. Der Vortrag greift diese Entwicklung auf, beleuchtet zentrale Prämissen und Ansätze und skizziert die Umrisse eines sich vollziehenden complexity shift in den Border Studies. Vor diesem Hintergrund wird abschließend die Rolle der disziplinenübergreifenden Zusammenarbeit in der zukünftigen Grenz(raum)forschung thematisiert
